The Lore

From early childhood in pre-school, to starting a band in middle school not knowing a thing about music, through the rebellious period of high school teen years, to now living together in another part of their country, emerging in the spark of the new progressive rock scene there - only one thing has remained the same for the three members of progressive metal band Viridian Paradise, friendship. One day at the Reaching for Rainbows daycare in Moncton, NB, Henry Smith and Jalen Melanson became friends before the days of elementary school in pre-school, not knowing that they would be roommates and bandmates 17 years later. Soon after Jalen switched to another daycare where him and Liam Reddin met becoming friends as well. Henry and Liam met in their kindergarten class and quickly became buddies, both sharing the same boredom and restlessness of class. It was not until middle school where all three boys were united and all became friends, hanging out together all the time. On a random day between mischief and class, they decided to start jamming and playing songs that they all found out each other loved; Henry had a couple drum lessons under his belt, Jalen couldn’t sing and knew three riffs on the piano (later switching to bass), and Liam knew nothing about music at all, but joined as the guitarist anyway. Sharing a love for Rush, Queen, Pink Floyd and The Beatles the boys slowly learned music through hundreds of hours of playing together, forming a bond and a truly special musical chemistry.High School for the trio was not an easy time, starting it off with Covid 19 pandemic meant more isolation from everyone in an already isolating environment. Diving deeper into music, adding lots heavy/progressive metal to their inspirations spawning from their angst. They, now titled Viridian Paradise because they thought it sounded awesome, started playing in front of their high school in assemblies and battle of the bands, thinking it was funny playing heavy music to people who listened to anything but. A love of playing live started and grew every time they played. Unfortunately, they had an enemy in the school constantly giving them the most difficult time, this negative force at be even turned off their amplifiers when performing. This only sparked more angst and rebellion from the band, playing louder and heavier to prove a point. From this time a philosophical sense arose in them, asking questions on why people are the way they are and why society is the way that it is. They began writing music centered around this, searching to create something new, combining their biggest influences musically such as TOOL, Rush, King Crimson and Pink Floyd. With a unique sound and name, Viridian Paradise decided to take this to the world, hoping their music would make others feel the same as they did when listening to music they loved. And that their lyrics would spark the same philosophical questions in their audience. Starting by playing bars around Moncton and around New Brunswick, they looked for something bigger than the dead all ages scene in their province. After graduation they decided to take the leap together and move to the hub of the music scene in Atlantic Canada, Halifax. Now living together in an apartment, they are stronger than ever, Viridian Paradise have just finished their debut LP “Vibrations”. Having recently played an outdoor skatepark show in downtown Halifax with prog rock/metal bands Fishmonger and Convulsion to 200 people, they are on the frontier of a new scene beginning in the city. From pre-school to playing music that was fueled through every experience they have been through, Viridian Paradise is the culmination of lifelong friendship and brotherhood.
